A New Poem

The Gift

by Bob Stegner

Completed October 9, 2021

Warsaw Poland

A gift

Lay upon my lap

The packaging

Unfamiliar

And plain

I Shake it

Hold it up to the light,

Listen

It shares nothing

Not origin,

Nor the hand that made it

I rip it open

And stare

A humble, brown box

Emerges

With a small note

Saying,

“I love you!”

Nothing more

In a rush

Of emotion,

And wonder,

And longing

She returns

From months long past

Again, I sense

Her warmth

And remember

Her handwriting

A shapely, gracious hand

Her face,

Her eyes,

Her hair,

Her touch

I pick through the small trove

Of sensual memorabilia

Of overwhelming passion

Of love

Of laughter

Of moments,

I thought,

Depleted and buried

But now

We are born

Once more

Raised up from the very heart

Of her

In this last and final gift

Carrying loss,

An aching shard of pain,

And the final whispers of a love,

Broken and fading

Into the remnants

And vastness

Of time

Famous Quote: Gene Roddenberry

Gene Roddenberry

Gene Roddenberry was the creator of Star Trek. I have been a fan ever since the original series! Below is a quote of his that I love!

“In a very real sense, we are all aliens on a strange planet. We spend our lives reaching out and trying to communicate. If during our whole lifetime, we could reach out and really communicate with just two people, we are indeed very fortunate.”

Finally Get To Travel Back To Europe!

I'm finally getting on a plane again and traveling back to Europe. I'll be in Poland for a month and will be seeing friends there, traveling around, and working on my fantasy book, THE VORTEX: Book III of the Alban Saga!

I love it there and am always inspired to write and have fun.

I'll update you on my progress while I'm there. What a year and a half this has been!

Carl Sagan Quote From 1996

Carl Sagan

Below is a prophetic quote from Carl Sagan in 1996.

“I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness…

The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.”
