Poem by Mary Oliver: THE SWAN

Love her poetry!

The Swan

Did you too see it, drifting, all night, on the black river?

Did you see it in the morning, rising into the silvery air –

An armful of white blossoms,

A perfect commotion of silk and linen as it leaned

into the bondage of its wings; a snowbank, a bank of lilies,

Biting the air with its black beak?

Did you hear it, fluting and whistling

A shrill dark music – like the rain pelting the trees – like a waterfall

Knifing down the black ledges?

And did you see it, finally, just under the clouds –

A white cross Streaming across the sky, its feet

Like black leaves, its wings Like the stretching light of the river?

And did you feel it, in your heart, how it pertained to everything?

And have you too finally figured out what beauty is for?

And have you changed your life?

Poetry Along A Hiking Trail In Washington State

Lyre Conservation Area Hike Near Joyce, WA

I was recently hiking this trail with my daughter and son-in-law. It's located on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. I noticed some signs along the way with poetry on them. It was a wonderful addition to the hike!

Below, I've included a picture of two of them. One has a poem from Edna St Vincent Millay and the other comes from one of my favorite poets, Mary Oliver!

If they're too small to read, just click on the first one. You will see a larger version of it on a different page with a black background. It should be easier to read. To view the second one, just click on its thumbnail at the bottom of the page.

Enjoy!

Mary Oliver Poem: The Summer Day

Love her poetry!

The Summer Day

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down- who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

CONSIDERING 2020

I was thinking about 2020 and all the worries and hard times. Then I found this Mary Oliver poem . . .

I Worried

by Mary Oliver

I worried a lot. Will the garden grow, will the rivers
flow in the right direction, will the earth turn
as it was taught, and if not how shall
I correct it?

Was I right, was I wrong, will I be forgiven,
can I do better?

Will I ever be able to sing, even the sparrows
can do it and I am, well,
hopeless.

Is my eyesight fading or am I just imagining it,
am I going to get rheumatism,
lockjaw, dementia?

Finally I saw that worrying had come to nothing.
And gave it up. And took my old body
and went out into the morning,
and sang.

One Of My Favorite Poets

Mary Oliver

Mary Oliver is one of my favorite poets. Sadly she passed away in January of this year. I'll miss her voice.
